Dawson College Bound Overview
Dawson College Bound serves high-achieving students in the Las Vegas Valley. Students begin participating in the summer following sixth grade and graduate from the program as they matriculate to high school. It is anticipated that each grade-level cohort will be comprised of approximately 60 students from Clark County School District schools.
Applying to Dawson College Bound
Our program seeks academically high-level students who have achieved high grades and test scores; possess excellent behavior and attendance; and have expressed a future desire to attend college. Participants are selected by their middle school counselors or principals and invited to apply to the program. The annual application deadline is in March.
The first Dawson College Bound cadre consisted of students who completed sixth grade during the 2012-2013 school year. They participated in the inaugural Summer Summit which was conducted during June and July, 2013. This first and second cadre of Bounders has continued engagement with Dawson College Bound via participation in our monthly Connections activities.
Mission and Goals
The mission of Dawson College Bound is to build a bridge to college for academically talented youth from the Las Vegas Valley through long-term academic enrichment and mentoring. The academic goals of Dawson College Bound are threefold:
1.To provide exceptional educational enrichment during the summer break, a time in which many students "lose" ground academically.
2.To assist participants in selecting and gaining admission to outstanding high schools (magnet, career and technical academy, private, or boarding).
3.To assist participants in selecting and achieving acceptance at top universities and honors college programs.
The social goal of Dawson College Bound is to grow a lifelong love of learning through an intensive work ethic that is valued and shared among like-minded peers.
